Looking back to a job well done
On its 28th anniversary last Sunday, May 12, Aliw Broadcasting Corporation remains firmly committed to serve the nation through the effective and competent delivery of news, information, entertainment and public service.
In a simple celebration today (May 16) at its head studio at the fifth floor of Citystate Tower Centre Bldg. on Shaw Blvd, Pasig City, officers and staff, program hosts, announcers, commentators, reporters and writers can look back with satisfaction and pride to a job well done.
They have lived up to their founder, Ambassador Antonio L. Cabangon Chua’s vision for Aliw Broadcasting to be an instrument to enlighten the people and help them make informed decisions about their lives.
As its current chairman, D. Edgard A. Cabangon put it in his message for the occasion, the Ambassador had believed in the power of the radio to shape an enlightened citizenry with its extensive reach to the remotest areas.
An enlightened citizenry, in turn, has the power to blaze a path toward progress and national development with their capability to decide wisely on issues that affect their lives.
On its milestone, the network continues its founder’s legacy of excellence in disseminating news and information under the leadership of Cabangon, supported by his brother D. Adrian Cabangon as vice president and general manager.
Today, ABC is recognized as one of the most dynamic broadcasting corporations operating in the Philippines. It currently operates 12 radio stations located throughout the archipelago with it’s flagship radio stations DWIZ 882 AM and 97.9 Home Radio FM.
The journey toward becoming a major broadcasting network began on May 12, 1991 when the late Ambassador acquired station DWIZ Sunshine City from the Elizalde family, owners and operators of Manila Broadcasting Company.
As a news talk radio station serving principally the Mega Manila market, DWIZ has vigorously upholds it’s slogan “Ang Himpilang May Todong Lakas, Balitang Sigurado, Tapat na Serbisyo, sa Komentaryo Numero Uno.”
With its strong signal powered by a 50,000-watt transmitter, it consistently delivers legitimate news, honest and sincere public service and intelligent commentaries of its broadcasters and columnists/commentators.
Today Aliw Broadcasting widens its reach even more through its online presence made possible by the DWIZ mobile app that is available at the Apple Store and Google Play Store. Likewise, it broadens its audience reach by being active on social media, such as Facebook, with the easily accessible FB Live broadcast of its daily shows on its official Facebook Fan Page, and on its website, www.dwiz882am.com. Through these channels, even Filipinos abroad can be updated with the latest news from home.
Listeners can also now join in the conversation by posting their own commentaries on current issues and news updates as they are aired simultaneously on the radio and on the internet. This fosters engagement with the audience, while also giving them the opportunity to interact with one another.
At present Aliw/DWIZ operates two news and music stations: DWIZ 89.3 Dagupan and DWIZ 94.3 Palawan. It also man-ages the operation of sev-en Home Radio stations located as follows: Home Radio 98.7 News FM- Davao, Home Radio 106.7 FM- Cebu, Home Radio 93.5 FM- Cagayan de Oro, Home Radio 89.5 FM- Iloilo, Home Radio 98.3 FM- General Santos, Home Radio 92.3 FM- Legaspi, and Home Radio 95.1 FM- Naga. Aliw Broadcasting Corporation is also being supported by its provincial broadcasting partners LAMRAG Home Radio Tacloban and different RPN provincial stations.
“KARAMBOLA” MARKS SUCCESSFUL
MERGING OF TRADITIONAL, SOCIAL MEDIA
The successful merging of traditional and social media broadcast is quite evident in the popularity of Karambola, DWIZ’s political program hosted by veteran journalists, Jojo Robles, Conrad Banal, Jonathan Dela Cruz, RJ Nieto a.k.a. Thinking Pinoy, and Atty. Trixie Cruz-Angeles. Airing Monday to Friday from 8 to 10 am, Karambola fearlessly tackles national issues and presents various interesting views from its hosts.
Initially, traditional mainstream media felt qualms about the rise of social media as source of news, analysis and commentary. Traditional media members had viewed the sudden increase in audience numbers among social media players and bloggers as a development that could make them lose their market.
Robles, de la Cruz, Banal and Nieto believe otherwise. To them, social media is another platform through which traditional media can learn the basics of gathering an audience. For itself, social media can learn from traditional media the discipline of good journalism.
There is no doubt that social media is the wave of the future. What DWIZ’s Karambola has done is merge both platforms to reach the biggest number of people possible.
Karambola breaks the hostility and competition between the two media platforms through integration, a bold and daring fusion of what both can offer in the service of the Filipino people.
DWIZ’S POWERHOUSE CAST AND PROGRAMS
MOST radio stations carry little music because of the belief that listeners want to be informed about what’s going on. The more information people get, the more they want. They need to feel that they are updated on the latest events.
To satisfy this need of listeners for up-to-the-minute news, DWIZ has newscasts three times daily through IZ Balita Nationwide, which airs Monday to Friday at 7 to 8 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon, and 4 to 4:30 p.m. On weekends, IZ Balita Nationwide also airs three times, from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., 12 to 12:30 p.m. and 4 to 4:30 p.m.
There are also “news bullets” called DWIZ Balita, aired every 30 minutes, and news flashes about important breaking news throughout the day.
IZ Balita Nationwide is being aired simultaneously over RPN stations nationwide by DWIZ newscasters Alex Santos, Ralph Obina and Edwin Eusebio.
Imee Marcos and Francis Tolentino at DWIZ
But beyond news reports, listeners also want to have the news explained and discussed by knowledgeable people. DWIZ satisfied this need when newly elected senators Imee Marcos and Francis Tolentino joined its rosters of program hosts. Ms. Marcos hosted the DWIZ program “Imee Sagot” while Tolentino had “TOL…Tolentino Online.”
Other DWIZ programs that provide political news, information and commentary include “Karambola,” a public affairs program featuring veteran journalists Jojo Robles, Conrad Banal, Jonathan Dela Cruz, RJ Nieto a.k.a. Thinking Pinoy, and Atty. Trixie Cruz-Angeles. Available online through video streaming, listeners are able to interact with the Karambola program hosts through its Facebook page.
Other public affairs programs of DWIZ are “Sapol” by veteran print newsman Jarius Bondoc, “Yes Yes Yo Topacio” by lawyer Ferdie Topacio, and “Pilipinas Ngayon Na” of former Undersecretary Robert Rivera. “In the Heart of Business” hosted by Roni Merk and Marou Pahati Sarne discusses current business issues and concerns and features business personalities as resource persons.
For public service, DWIZ has “Senior Citizens Forum” hosted by Meng Canlas, “Mr Taxman” of Gerry Flores, “Bukid sa Himpapawid and Agriculture” of Ka Tunying Santos,” “Balita Na Serbisyo Pa” of Edwin Eusebio, and “Radyo Klinika “ of Marou Pahati Sarne.
A counseling program is also hosted by former film director Heidi Sison. Named “Direk Heidi,” the program airs every Sunday at 10 to 11 a.m. and dishes out advice on various topics to callers.
DWIZ’s latest entertainment program is OPM sa DWIZ, aired every Sunday from 1 to 2:30 pm and hosted by Richard Merk.
