MAY 1,000 local at foreign athletes ang magbabakbakan sa National Open at 14th Southeast Youth Athletics Championships na aarangkada sa susunod na buwan sa Ilagan, Isabela.
Ang SEA Youth ay lalarga sa Marso 2-3, tampok ang 11 bansa, habang ang National Open ay sasambulat sa Marso 6-8 kung saan lalahok dito ang 17 bansa.
“I am pretty sure the twin athletics competitions will be interesting to watch because many countries are taking part,” sabi ni PATAFA president Philip E. Juico.
Sinabi ng dating Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman na ang dalawang nabanggit na torneo ay magsisilbing batayan sa pagpili sa mga atleta na isasabak sa 30th Southeast Asian Games na gaganapin sa bansa sa Nobyembre.
“The National Open tests the strength and competitiveness of the national athletes. They should not go easy against foreign rivals and a horde of athletes from UAAP, NCAA and SCUAA out to frustrate them,” wika ni Juico.
Ayon kay Ilagan Councilor at PATAFA area vice president Josemari Diaz, pinaaayos na ng city government ang sports complex bilang paghahanda sa dalawang prestihiyosong athletics competitions.
“The sports complex has undergone renovation, improvement and refurbishing for the tournaments,” sabi ni Diaz.
Kabilang sa mga bansang lalahok sa National Open ang Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Korea, Sri Lanka, India, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, at Malaysia.
May 44 events, kasama ang dalawang mixed gender relays, ang paglalabanan sa National Open at 32 events naman ang nakataya sa SEA Youth.
Bukod kay Brazil Olympian Eric Shawn Cray, ang iba pang Fil-Ams sa torneo ay sina Anthony Trenten Beram, Kristina Knott, Thomas Morrison, Robyn Brown, Carter Lily, Alyana Nicolas at ang twins na sina Kyla Anise at Kayla Ashley Richardson.
Ang locals ay pangungunahan nina reigning decathlon champion Aries Toledo at current SEA Games triple jump king Mark Harry Diones, Marco Vilog, Edgardo Alejan, Christian Archand Bagsit, Emmuel Camino, Jomar Udtohan, Christopher UIboc, Mervin Guarte at Francis Medina. CLYDE MARIANO
