THE Department of Education aims to develop 21st century learners, therefore, we teachers should also possess 21st century skills. It had been a repeating statement that teaching is a profession above all because a teacher shares the knowledge to build others. Since we are called 21st Century teachers, we are expected to perform our duties with 5 C’s, to wit:

  • Commitment. Commitment spells success. First, we have to be committed in our profession and all the good things will fol-low. It is very important for us teachers to be committed in our work because we are dealing with human being who will take care of the future. As teachers, we are committed to our students and their learning and it should be our goal to develop learners and produce holistically develop citizens who are globally competitive with a heart.
  • Compassionate. To make a difference in learners’ lives is teachers greatest achievement. We should touch their lives by help-ing them to be the best person that they can be. We can show compassion by caring for our learners, we should have a heart for our them, making them feel love and understood, giving them the parental love they need for we teachers are called second parents.
  • Creative. As teachers, we must also be creative with our craft. Making our teaching more interesting and fun, employing various strategies and techniques. We should make innovations to make teaching effective. The use of technology is one of the million ways that will allow learning experiences more naturally and seamlessly. Creativity is to facilitate and inspire learners learning so that all students will have greater opportunities in the global society.
  • Competent. Teacher is a “must-know-all” because we cannot give what we do not have. We should have the mastery of what we teach. Competence redounds to effectiveness and efficiency. We should not stop learning so that we can also expect competent learners. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. Maximize our learner’s potential, equip and them with the 21st century skills and capacitate them to become resilient, digital masters, critical thinkers and problem solver that will lead them to a brighter future.
  • Character. The most important C that a 21st century teacher should possess, character. As the cliché says, “Brilliance is useless, character is the best”. It is essential for us to possess a good character for us to have a good relationship with our learners, co-workers, parents, stakeholders and to our superior. It is also our key for us to perform our duties well. The character that we possess and show to our learners will be carried throughout their lives, therefore, we should inculcate good values in them.

Indeed, teaching is the noblest profession. 21st century teachers clothe with 5 C’s lead to success and outstanding performance.
