IT was fake news. It was a post from an insensitive individual that 80s Sex Goddess Anna Marie Gutierrez is already dead. “The news that I’m dead was hurtful to my family,” she said.
I just had a lengthy interview with the popular star in the 80s and she’s very healthy and enthusiastic with my interview.
“Ngayon lang ako gumawa ng Facebook account ko to prove my detractors wrong. Buhay pa po ako and I am happy living in New York for 30 years”, she said.
When asked why did she leave showbiz at the prime of her career, she replied, “I need a change. I said to myself, it’s time to exit as new faces are emerging and I want to change career and my way of life. I was not getting any younger so it was the right time to exit.” I want to exit while I’m still in the height of my career so no regrets. I’m glad I did.
It can be recalled that Annie (her pet name) was a Gerard Peter model before becoming an actress. Her career started as one of Dolphy’s Angels along with Yehlen Catral, Liz Alindogan and Carmi Martin. She has done around 80 films but she achieved full stardom when she did the erotic thriller, Scorpio Nights under the helm of the award-winning director, Peque Gallaga in 1985. The movie also stars Orestes Ojeda and now Governor of Bulacan Daniel Fernando. When asked if she got close to her co-stars in the sensational Scorpio Nights, Annie said, “We’re friends but not really close to them. Haven’t heard anything about Orestes but I am happy that Daniel is now the Governor of Bulacan. I am sure he is doing well as a politician”
Annie was not just a sexy star. She won Best Actress at the Gawad Urian for the film Takaw Tukso in 1986 and in the PMPC Star Awards for Movies in Unfaithful Wife (1986) and Hubad Na Pangarap (1987).
“I enjoyed showbiz very much. My close friends include Irma Alegre, Liz Alindogan, Imelda Ilanan and Chanda Romero. I was also close to Isabel Rivas.” Boyfriend? Yes I did go out with Gino Antonio (sexy stud in the 80s) but it didn’t last long as we have different dreams.
Anna Marie left showbiz in 1987 and flew to New York for a change in her career. Her first job was a diamond sorter and pearl bracelet maker. She went to school for medical administration and now she is the Assistant Administrator for surgical unit, ENT an dermatology. “I am retiring in December and I am very excited”.
“Will you consider going back to showbiz after your retirement, I asked. “Perhaps, if a good project
comes along I may consider it”, she replied. Anna Marie is enjoying her life in New York as her life is simple no complications at all. She thinks showbiz life is fun when you’re young but she believes in stability and she said she won’t get it in the Philippine movie industry.
