NANAWAGAN ang Estados Unidos sa China na huwag manghimasok sa South China Sea at binalaan na anumang pag-atake sa Philippine military ay magti-trigger sa 1951 mutual defense treaty.

Ito ang mariing sinabi ni US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sa paggunita ng ikalimang anibersaryo ng 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration na nagpapawalang bisa sa claim ng China na nine-dash-line sa South China Sea.

Ang nasabing desisyon ay hindi kinikilala ng China.

“We also reaffirm that an armed attack on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the South China Sea would invoke US mutual defense commitments under Article IV of the 1951 US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty,” pahayag niya

Nakasaad sa Article IV ng 70-year-old defense na kapag nalagay sa panganib ang kaligtasan at kapayapaan ng dalawang bansa ay magtutulungan.

“We call on [the People’s Republic of China] to abide by its obligations under international law, cease its provocative behavior, and take steps to reassure the international community that it is committed to the rules-based maritime order that respects the rights of all countries, big and small,” ayon pa kay Blinken.
