Nakatanggap ng Conditional Emergency Use Approval (EUA) and bakunang Covaxin mula sa Food and Drug Administration (FDA), at kasalukuyang naghihintay na lamang ang ahensya na makatanggap ito ng Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification mula sa ano mang bansang miyembro ng Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperation Scheme (PIC/S). Ang Covaxin ay ang pang-apat na bakunang binigyan ng EUA sa Pilipinas.
Ang Pilipinas ay ang ikasiyam na bansang nagkaloob ng EUA sa Covaxin, na may 81% efficacy rate bilang tradisyonal at inactivated na bakuna. Ang Covaxin ay ang kauna-unahang COVID-19 vaccine na binuo sa India ng Bharat Biotech, sa tulong ng Indian Council of Medical Research. Sa kasalukuyan, milyon-milyong tao na ang gumamit nito sa COVID-19 vaccination program ng India, kasama ang mga opisyal tulad ng kanilang Prime Minister Narenda Modi.
Ang kumpanyang IP Biotech, Inc. (IPB) ang eksklusibong importer at distributor ng Covaxin sa Pilipinas. Hinirang naman ng nauna ang Ambitech Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. (Ambitech) bilang opisyal na consolidator.
Matatandaan na nakaiskedyul na ang pag-uusap ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte at Prime Minister Modi tungkol sa pinalakas na relasyon ng Pilipinas at India. Ayon sa IPD, patuloy pa din ang alokasyon ng India ng bakuna para sa ibang bansa, bagaman tumataas din ang mga kaso nila ng COVID-19.
“Nagpapasalamat kami sa FDA dahil sa kanilang tiwala sa Covaxin, at umaasa kami na ito ay karagdagang hakbang upang maipamahagi na ang bakunang ito sa ating mga kababayan,” banggit ni IPB Chairman Enrique Gonzalez. “Naniniwala kami na ang walong milyong dosis na alokasyon para sa ating bansa ay malaking tulong para sa lahat, at ang susunod naming prayoridad ay pumirma ng multi-party agreement kasama ng gobyerno, at sang ayon sa Republic Act 11525.”
“Handa ang Ambitech na tumugon sa pangangailangan ng mga Pilipino, at maghatid ng bakuna sa pribadong sektor sa buong bansa,” dagdag ni Ambitech President Kamal Abichandani. “Mapalad ang pagsasaoras ng EUA, sapagkat ang Covaxin ay napatunayan nang epektibo laban sa iba’t-ibang strain ng COVID-19.”
Para naman sa Ambassador ng India sa Pilipinas na si Shambhu S. Kumaran, napakalaking bagay ang pagtutulungan ng dalawang bansa upang labanan ang pandemya. “Nais kong bumati at magpasalamat sa mga naaangkop na opisyal ng Pilipinas, dahil sa magandang balitang ito. Ang Covaxin ay mahalagang patunay na ang India at Pilipinas ay pinagbuklod sa laban kontra COVID-19.”
