Bong Go advocates for Disaster Resilience measures as he sends assistance to flood victims in Maigo, Lanao del Norte

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go’s team coordinated with Mayor Rafael Rizalda and visited Maigo, Lanao del Norte to provide assistance to flood victims at the municipal covered court.

The senator’s team on Thursday, October 12, provided shirts, snacks, masks, vitamins, and balls for basketball and volleyball to 18 flood victims. They likewise gave away cellular phones to select recipients.

Aside from the assistance from Go, qualified beneficiaries also received housing assistance from the National Housing Authority (NHA) under the agency’s Emergency Housing Assistance Program (EHAP).

Go said in a video message.

In a bid to fortify the nation’s resilience against disasters, Go filed two of his legislative priorities: Senate Bill No. (SBN) 188, which aims to establish the Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR), and SBN 193, also known as the Mandatory Evacuation Center Act.

These proposed bills are geared towards bolstering the government’s ability to respond to calamities with increased effectiveness and ensure the provision of vital shelters for those affected by disasters.

If enacted into law, SBN 188 shall mandate the establishment of DDR, a government body singularly dedicated to crafting comprehensive strategies for bolstering the government’s disaster response capabilities. On the other hand, SBN 193 emphasizes the importance of establishing evacuation centers equipped with proper facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of those displaced by disasters.

Go stressed the imperative nature of these initiatives, taking into account the diverse array of disasters that frequently impact the country, including floods, typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and fires.

Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, offered to help those in need of medical care. He said there are Malasakit Centers in the province and these are located at the Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital (GTLMH) in Iligan City and at the Kapatagan Provincial Hospital in Kapatagan town.

Under Republic Act No. 11463, which Go principally authored and sponsored, Malasakit Centers ensure that medical assistance programs are within reach of poor and indigent patients. There are now 159 operational centers across the country.

Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance, supported the construction of farm-to-market roads in Bacolod and Lala; road rehabilitation in Munai; purchase of one ambulance unit in Kapatagan; construction of flood control and drainage structure in Lala; rehabilitation of public markets in Magsaysay; and construction of multipurpose buildings in Kauswagan, Nunungan, Pantao Ragat, Pantar, Salvador, Tangcal and Tubod.

Last June, he also conducted a site inspection for the upcoming legislative building project in Tubod, which he also supported the funding of.
