INAASAHANG bababa ang padalang pera ng overseas Filipino workers ngayong taon dahil sa corona-virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, ayon sa  Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

“The baseline assumption is that remittances will grow 3% in 2020,” wika ni BSP Assistant Governor Illuminada Sicat sa isang virtual press briefing.

Noong nakaraang taon, ang remittances ay lumago ng 4.1% sa $30.1 billion mula sa $28.9 billion noong 2018.

“[B]ut considering there are already OFWs being repatriated particularly from the sea-based sector, we see there will be a contraction in remittances by about .2 to .8 percentage point,” ani Sicat.

Gayunman, sinabi ng central bank official na maaaring bumaba pa ang remittances sa gitna ng sumusulpot na pangyayari na may kaugnayan sa pandemic.

“The uncertainty is linked to the fact that we’re not sure how quickly global trade activity will rebound over the next years,” pahayag ni BSP Director for Economic Research Dennis Lapid.
