QUEZON CITY – The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) is spearheading the celebration of the National Shelter Month this October through a lined up series of activities, including an extensive information drive.
In light of the recent pandemic and how it affected the housing sector, the department chose the theme “Ensuring resilient homes and sustainable communities for a better normal” for this year’s celebration.
“This year’s celebration is especially poignant. As we spend more time in homes as an effect of the extended quarantine, we now see the necessity of having safe and resilient shelters and sustainable communities which serve as havens against natural and health hazards,” DHSUD Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario said.
“We will take this month as an opportunity to strive harder in performing our mandate of providing decent, affordable, resilient homes and sustainable communities to 81 percent of Filipino families who continue to dream of having houses of their own,” he added.
Secretary Del Rosario reiterated that he considers owning a house as a right, home ownership is an option and it is the responsibility of the department to help every Filipino family who wishes to own a home realize that dream.
The highlight of the National Shelter Month would be a web-wide education and information campaign promoting the event with the issuance of relevant publication and communication materials, especially on consumer welfare.
An unveiling of this year’s logo bearing the theme in DHSUD’s website and social media accounts kick-started the National Shelter Month Monday. This will be followed by a video message by DHSUD Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario to be released on October 5.
On October 29, the inter-agency National Human Settlements Board, which the DHSUD sits as chair, will conduct its inaugural meeting and shall cap-off the month-long festivities.
Proclamation No. 662 declares the month of October every year as National Shelter Month where it recognizes housing as vital to the overall development of the country and enhancement of the social, economic and spiritual well-being of Filipinos.
