DTI LAUNCHES TATAK: MATATAG NA NEGOSYO WITH PRIVATE SECTOR TO BOLSTER MICRO STORES

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has partnered with twelve (12) organizations to help usher micro stores towards becoming more resilient and sustainable stores in a movement dubbed as the Tatak: Matatag na Negosyo (TMN).

Launched during the opening of the National MSME Week 2021 on 02 August 2021, the TMN is a coalition born out of the desire of government agencies, microfinance institutions, civil society organizations, and business corporations to help micro retailers thread through the challenges of the pandemic with the goal of supporting a safe economic recovery of the retail industry.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez underscored the importance of a whole-of-society approach in aiding micro-stores to enhance their management and labor capacities, as well as improve their access to market and finance.

Sec. Lopez said, “This will ensure their sustainability through the present pandemic and beyond. DTI has always believed that a strong collaboration with our private sector partners is a key element towards the development of our MSMEs to become more competitive and innovative.”

DTI Regional Operations Group (ROG) Undersecretary Blesila Lantayona commended the development of TMN. “We are sincerely grateful to our partners under this worthwhile multi-cooperation in creating opportunities for micro-stores to become more sustainable and resilient, especially as they reboot their business in this time of crisis. The strengthening of micro businesses has always been one of the priority interventions of the DTI, and the establishment of the TMN will have far-reaching benefits to the sector to thrive amid and beyond mishaps,” Undersecretary Lantayona expressed.

Along with DTI, the following organizations pledged to pitch in on championing micro stores through the TMN: ASA Philippines Foundation, Inc., Alalay sa Kaunlaran Microfinance Social Development, Inc., Coca-Cola Philippines, Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Design Center of the Philippines, Nestle Philippines, Small Business Corporation, Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation, Philippine Young Entrepreneurs Association, Procter and Gamble Philippines, Inc., Suy Sing Commercial Corp., Unilever Philippines, Inc.

The trade chief said this initiative, which is fully supported by the MSME Development Council, “will not only ensure our micro enterprises can respond effectively during the present crisis, it will also protect their income and in the long-term, assist them into becoming sustainable stores that are permanent fixtures of their communities.”

Micro establishments made up the majority of Philippine Statistics Authority-recorded Philippine MSMEs in 2019, accounting for 89% of the total number of business enterprises in the country. They also had the largest proportion of jobs generated, accounting for 29.8% or over 2.7 million jobs.

Furthermore, wholesale and retail trade leads the statistics in terms of the industry sector. Hence, DTI and Coca-Cola Philippines initiated this cooperation with various organizations in providing opportunities among micro stores to achieve long-term growth.
