LIFELONG learning is the “on-going, voluntary, and self-motivated” pursuit of knowledge either for personal or professional reasons. Do you agree that it is not only the actual learners or the students who must be lifelong learners but also teachers?
Each school year brings new people into a teacher’s life. This means that teachers are handling different learners every year. Each year of teaching brings new lessons and perspectives. This year is very challenging for all and the teachers’ patience are tested. Because having to teach in different manner compared to what teachers are used to be doing several years, lifelong learning skills must be at work. Teachers need to equip ourselves with new skills in technology. For example, since online communication is needed, teachers need to learn how to use gadgets.
Since teaching is a job that encourages mentor’s own growth and continuous education, teachers must not stop from learning new things every day. Mentors must not be afraid to explore new endeavors because that is the only way to still learn.
The growth of an educator can happen only if they keep on challenging themselves. Teachers must try to get out of their new comfort zones. Learn more every day, attend seminars, forums, conferences. Participate in the LAC Session (Learning Action Cells) in schools. Share new knowledge to others. Read and read more. Do not get tired of learning because the students are also learning in every way.
Doing some personal and professional reflections is a mark of a lifelong learner. Mentors must check what your skills they have—are knowledge added? Are some teachers no longer interested in growing personally or professionally?
Teachers who are lifelong learners are resilient to any changes. They can manage to stay in critical environment and they can influence others to change. By GERALD N. SANTIAGO
