FREDDIE AGUILAR MUSICAL CARAVAN MALAPIT NANG SIMULAN

FREDDIE AGUILAR

BUTTERFLY”

RS FRANCISCOTHE recently-concluded mammoth production of playwright David Hwang’s “M. Butterfly” was the most significant in the act-ing career of RS Francisco, the prime mover behind the highly millennial- friendly business enterprise Frontrow.

RS played the  lead role of a Chinese spy Song Liling during  Mao Tze Tung’s Cultural Revolution. He reprised the same role 28 years ago at Dulaang UP when  he was barely 18  years old, and wet behind his ears.

RS thinks his approach to his role was the style of acting he used long time ago with a lot of heart and soul, albeit  coupled now with his personal opinion on women and his  perception of life as he senses it being a highly empowered member of  the LGBT community. He disclosed further that ever since he was never into an acting workshop.

So he got none of the acting conundrums of the great Stanislavsky, Strasberg and  Adler who wrangled to death their own ver-sion of Method Acting, including Eric Morris’ who came here to introduce a recycled version of Stanislavsky’s acting craft prepara-tion that he wrote in his book “No Acting Please,” etc.

Short of saying his main acting tool is intuition in its ultimate organic calm before the proverbial tempest. Think Nora Aunor’s legendary, matchless acting who like him has not been to any shopworn acting school.

Barring some trifling rant reviews, RS’s received a glowing, rave assessments in “M. Butterfly” from who’s who amongst who know their theater vocabulary. In my own assessment, RS showed the very scarring truth of his own personality. This made his performance seriously affecting, totally bereft of any acting technique or flourish.

To approximate the words of critique James Devereaux in his tribute to the classic performance of Audrey Hepburn in the film “Love In The Afternoon,” to my own equation RS Francisco reflected the sweetness of his nature which was the reveal and truth of his soul.

His acting then was nothing short of great because he showed the truth of his own personality and performance which to the aforesaid critique are one and the same thing. If he did construct another character apart from his own, he would have made a big lie to himself and to his audience.

In hindsight, RS has bagged three best actor awards for his notable role in Joel Lamangan’s “Bhoy Intsik,” namely from Sinag Maynila Indie Filmfest, 1st Subic Bay Int’l. Film Festival, and PMPC Star Awards for Movies.
