(Kafala system pinabubuwag ni Duterte) PROTEKSIYON SA OFWS

BILANG pagbibigay ng proteksiyon sa overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), nais ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na maiwaksi na ang Kafala system na aniya’y disadvantageous position lalo na sa panahon ngayon ng pandemya.

Sa kanyang talumpati sa Migrant Labor Governance and Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, sinabi ni Pangulong Duterte na ang Kafala system ay maituturing na “unjust at exploitative” at naglalagay sa libo-libong migrant workers, partikular ang mga  household worker sa Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, sa alanganing sitwasyon.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed migrant workers especially those under the Kafala system to even more precarious position,” sabi pa ng Pangulo.

“As the world went into lockdowns, many were driven into destitution with no job, no social safety nets and no money to send back home. These cannot go on. We must address the structural inequalities and push migrant workers to the grim reality,” giit pa ng Pangulo.

Ang Kafala system ay sponsorship type o ang employer sa Middle East ang direktang kukuha ng nais niyang tauhan sa Filipinas.

Batay sa mga naunang ulat, sa nasabing sistema ay may nalalabag na karapatang pantao o kaya naman ay mayroon umanong pang-aabuso sa mga OFW, lalo na sa mga domestic helper.

“The Philippine government strongly calls for the complete abolition of the Kafala system sooner rather than later. We cannot justify the denial of basic human rights and fundamental freedoms to any individual, regardless of status,” ayon sa Pangulong Duterte.

Giit pa ng Pangulo,  responsibilidad niya ang pangalagaan ang kaligtasan at dignidad ng bawat Filipino at ang kanyang panawagan na i-abolish ang Kafala system ay bahagi ng kanyang pag-iingat sa OFWs habang nais ipaalam sa buong mundo na ang migranteng Pinoy ay hindi alipin.

“The Philippine government assumes its part of the responsibility in ensuring that our people live in safety and dignity, wherever they may be. As I have said before, the Filipino is not a slave to anyone, anywhere,” dagdag pa ng Pangulo.  EVELYN QUIROZ
