As the world observes the UN’s “World Poetry Day” on March 21, 85-year-old Kamuning Bakery Cafe in Quezon City paid tribute to the nation’s rich literary heritage through the revival of the Balagtasan tradition. This year marks the centennial milestone of the Balagtasan literary duel, with the Pandesal Forum of Kamuning Bakery Cafe hosting three esteemed poets: U.P. Professor Dr. Vim Nadera, Ateneo de Manila University Professor Dr. Mike Coroza, and US-based poet Teo Antonio.
On March 21st, in celebration of #WorldPoetryDay, Kamuning Bakery Cafe invites patrons to savor the enchantment of words with a special offering.
Throughout the day, visitors are encouraged to share their original poems in any language and receive a complimentary cup of freshly brewed coffee in return.
This initiative, led by owner and poet Wilson Lee Flores, aims to nurture creativity, commemorate language, and honor the essence of poetry.
During the event on March 20th, the three poets mesmerized the audience with their Balagtasan performances on the hot topic of Charter Change. Dr. Nadera, former Director of the Kalikasan UP Creative Writing Center and the Philippine High School for the Arts, alongside Dr. Coroza, President of the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL), showcased the enduring impact of poetry.
Dr. Coroza extended an invitation to writers to attend UMPIL’s annual conference on April 27th at Jimenez Gallery, U.P. Diliman, with the theme “Writers as Peace Activists.”
Wilson Lee Flores expressed his delight in merging his love for poetry with his passion for coffee.
“Poetry possesses the ability to uplift, inspire, and unite individuals from all walks of life. Through this endeavor, we aim to cultivate an environment where creativity thrives and the beauty of language is revered,” remarked Flores.
Situated at Judge Jimenez Street corner K-1st Street, Barangay Kamuning, Quezon City, Kamuning Bakery Cafe welcomes poetry enthusiasts from 5 am to 9 pm to partake in the celebration of #WorldPoetryDay on March 21st.
