KONTRA-DIABETES

doc ed bien

You’re gonna get diabetes later on if you eat a lot of it. Promise. Isa sa paborito kong pelikula ang Forrest Gump and in fact I’m hoping for a part 2. Pero nakalulungkot isipin na sa tunay na buhay ay may diabetes pala ang bida rito.

“I was heavy. You’ve seen me in movies, you know what I looked like. I was a total idiot. I went to the doctor, and he said, ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you’ve graduated! You’ve got type 2 diabetes, young man.’ I thought I could avoid it by removing the buns from my cheeseburgers,” pag-aamin ni Tom Hanks sa isang interview.

Basil Leaves

Basil LeavesBasil may help to lower fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. There was a study done on 40 type 2 diabetics. Half of the patients were given 2.5 g of holy basil leaf powder daily, and the other half were given a placebo for 4 weeks. At the end of the study, holy basil was found to reduce FBS levels by approximately 17.6 %, and post-meal blood glucose levels by 7.3%.

Mango Leaves

The extract can improve insulin production and distribution of glucose, effectively stabilizing blood sugar levels in diabetics. Because mango leaves are rich in pectin, vitamin C, and fiber, they can also lower bad cholesterol. Plus, mango leaves can reduce some symptoms of diabetes, such as frequent urination at night, unexplained weight loss, and blurry vision.

Ampalaya

AMPALAYAThe fruit contains at least three active substances with anti-diabetic properties, including charantin, which has been confirmed to have a blood glucose-lowering effect, vicine and an insulin-like compound known as polypeptidep. These substances either work individually or together to help reduce blood sugar levels.

Cinnamon

Results from a clinical study published in the Diabetes Care Journal suggest that cassia cinnamon (bark) improves blood glucose and cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes, and may reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A daily intake was shown to reduce serum glucose, triglyceride, LDL and total cholesterol after 40 days among 60 middle-aged diabetics.

Curry Leaves

CURRY LEAVESA research published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology claimed that the extract can help to reduce the seriousness of diabetes. Aromatic curry leaf also act as an effective agent which works well in controlling the high blood sugar. Many minerals contained in curry leaf can aid in maintaining normal blood sugar level and influence the carbohydrate metabolism as well.

Aloe Vera

Aloe has been linked with decrease of blood lipids (fats) in patients with abnormally high levels of these molecules in the blood, decreases swelling and faster healing of wound injuries. Leg wounds and ulcers are common complications of diabetes, and they typically take longer time to heal than in healthy non-diabetic individuals.

Guava

A research study published in the Journal Nutrition & Metabolism suggests that guava leaves can treat diabetes by reducing the blood sugar levels. The study further explains that guava leaves can reduce the action of an enzyme known as alpha-glucosidase, which is responsible for converting food into glucose in the blood, thus reducing blood sugar levels.

Green Tea

GREEN TEAThe predominant active compounds in green tea are flavonoid monomers known as catechins, in particular epigallocatechin-3-gallate, which is the most abundant and most effective catechin in metabolic care, particularly among obese patients. Green tea extract is a promising alternative for reducing Type 2 diabetes risk in overweight women.

Oregano

In a study carried out by scientists from the American Chemical Society and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, oregano was found to contain an enzyme known as dipeptidyl peptidase IV, which promotes insulin secretion. Tyrosine phosphate, a protein that plays a key role in signaling insulin, has made researchers believe it could help manage blood sugar levels and preventing diabetes.

Okra

Okra has long been favored as a food for the health-conscious. It contains potassium, vitamin B, vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium. It is low in calories and has a high dietary fiber content. Recently, a new benefit of including okra in your diet is being considered. Okra has been suggested to help manage blood sugar in cases of type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

 PAALALA!

Firstly, do not be lulled into a sense of complacency that using herbal remedies is a cure for diabetes. Nakatutulong po ang mga ito to control blood sugar levels, ngunit kailangan pa rin na ma-monitor ang inyong dugo. Secondly, do not expect immediate results. Iba-iba po ang response ng ating mga katawan sa natural therapies. Thirdly, you must always discuss your plans with your doctor, nutritionist and other healthcare team to ensure they are safe for your condition and determine a suitable dose.
