Time in China, Kiss of the Dragon, Fearless, Hero, atbp. May 25 bilang World Thyroid Day to raise awareness on thyroid-related diseases.
Formally known as the Shenzhen One Foundation Charity Fund, itinatag ito ni Jet Li noong December 3, 2010 to focus on disaster relief, funding grassroots charities at children’s welfare.
All, Doing What I Can”
The One Foundation promotes donations under the slogan “1 person + 1 dollar + 1 month = 1 big family”. Nakatanggap sila ng $30,000 USD within just a few days after the tragedy.
Sinasabi sa mga report, “Martial arts superstar Jet Li has been plagued by injuries since his teens and suffers hyperthyroidism as well as spinal problems. Li has said that his resting heart rate can go up to 130 beats per minute, and that he cannot do any rigorous exercise. He had been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid in 2010 and although he took medication, the condition kept coming back. Li says his strong belief in Buddhism as well as meditation and scripture reading help stabilize his condition.” Hyperthyroidism accelerates the body’s metabolism and can lead to serious complications if left untreated, such as heart failure and osteoporosis. Other celebrities who have thyroid problems include TV host Oprah Winfrey, British rocker Rod Stewart, and former US President George Bush and his late wife Barbara. Bakit ba sila pa? Hindi na lang ang mga perhuwisyong iba.
ANO ANG HYPERTHYROIDISM?
Ang thyroid ay butterfly-shaped organ na located at the base of our neck. It is small but controls one of the most important aspects of the human body, that is, metabolism, through the thyroid hormones it secretes. Hyperthyroidism happens when the thyroid is overactive and produces too much thyroid hormone. The most common cause is Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that increases the production of antibodies to stimulate thyroid hormones. The disease can also lead to eye problems such as bulging eyes. While the exact causes of Graves’ disease remain unknown, studies suggest genetic and environmental factors, including stress, might be involved. “The thyroid hormone itself is a stress hormone. It will shoot up if the patient has high levels of stress over a period of time,” ayon sa isang endocrinologist.
There are several causes of hyperthyroidism. Most often, the entire gland is overproducing thyroid hormone. Less commonly, a single nodule is responsible for the excess hormone secretion, called a “hot” nodule.
Narito pa ang ibang dahilan nito:
- Thyroiditis – inflammation of the thyroid, maaaring from viral infection.
- Graves’ disease – an autoimmune disease.
- Thyroid adenoma – thought to be due to a low level of dietary iodine.
- Toxic multi-nodular goiter
- Hamburger hyperthyroidism – consumption of ground beef contaminated with thyroid tissue
- Amiodarone, – an antiarrhythmic drug, is structurally similar to thyroxine.
- Postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) – occurs in about 7% of women during the year after they give birth.
- Kelp – excess iodine consumption notably from algae.
- Pituitary adenoma – hypersecretion of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
- Diarrhea – kahit walang masamang nakain.
- Nervousness – laging kinakabahan.
- Loss of cheerfulness – walang gana sa buhay.
- Poor concentration – hirap mag-focus.
- Irregular menstruation – minsan pumapalya.
- Fatigue – pagkahapo at pagod.
- Palpitations – napakabilis ng tibok ng puso.
- Irritable – maiinitin ang ulo.
- Increased sweating – mainit ang pakiramdam.
- Tremors – panginginig.
- Exophthalmos – pagluwa ng mata.
- Lack of energy in the body – panghihina.
- Inappropriate angry response – parang galit lagi.
We hope and pray for Jet Li’s full recovery.
Abangan!
