INAASAHANG makababalik ang ekonomiya ng bansa sa pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels sa huling bahagi ng susunod na taon, ayon sa pagtaya ng National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).
Sa deliberasyon ng House Committee on Appropriations sa panukalang P5.024-trillion national budget para sa 2022, sinabi ni Socioeconomic Planning Secretary at NEDA chief Karl Kendrick Chua na nananatiling “encouraging” ang recovery prospects para sa 2021.
“[This] will allow us to recover to pre-pandemic levels some time at the end of 2022, if not early 2023,” ani Chua.
“This will also help prevent long-term scarring and productivity losses,” dagdag pa niya.
Ang gross domestic product (GDP) ng bansa ay lumago ng 11.8% sa second quarter ng 2021, ang pinakamataas na quarterly reading nito sa loob ng 32 taon sa likod ng “low base effect” kung saan ang comparable period noong 2020 ay nasa -16.9%.
Ang second quarter ng 2020 ay ang panahon kung kailan karamihan sa mga negosyo ay nagsara dahil sa pagpapatupad ng enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) para mapigilan ang pagkalat ng COVID-19.
Bagama’t nakaalis na ang Pilipinas sa recession, ang ekonomiya ng bansa ay malayo pa rin sa growth levels nito noong 2019, bago ang COVID-19 pandemic.
Ayon kay Chua, ang pagbangon ng ekonomiya ng bansa ay nakasalalay sa pagpapabilis sa vaccination program, ligtas na re-opening ng ekonomiya habang mahigpit na sumusunod sa health protocols, at full implementation ng recovery packages tulad ng 2021 budget, Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises Act (CREATE), at Financial Institutions Strategic Transfer (FIST) law.
