BUMABA ang produksiyon ng mangga sa bansa sa first quarter ng 9.39 percent sa 97,700 metric tons (MT) mula sa 107,830 MT na naitala sa kaparehong panahon noong nakaraang taon, ayon sa Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
“The downtrend in mango production with this year’s 9.39 percent drop was due to the occurrence of capsid bug, cecid fly and other fruit flies and the late flowering of some trees in Ilocos Region and Central Luzon,” pahayag ng PSA sa report nito kamakailan sa agriculture performance.
Ayon sa PSA, ang pagbaba ng output ay nagresulta sa 39.55 porsiyentong pagtaas sa average farm-gate price ng mangga sa January-to-March peri-od.
Ang average farm-gate quotation ng mangga sa unang tatlong buwan ay pumalo sa P58.76 kada kilo, mas mataas ng P16.65 sa P42.11-per-kg price level na naiposte sa kahalintulad na panahon noong 2017.
Ang mas mataas na farm-gate prices ay nagtulak sa halaga ng mango production sa first quarter sa P5.741 billion, na mas mataas ng 26.44 percent sa P4.54 billion na naitala noong nakalipas na taon.
Samantala, tumaas naman ang banana output sa reference period ng 2.06 percent sa 2.143 MMT, mula sa 2.1 MMT na naitalang produksiyon sa January-to-March period ng 2017.
Ayon sa PSA, ito ay bunga ng mas masaganang ani at paglawak ng banana plantations sa ilang bahagi ng bansa.
“In Davao Region, there were increases in the number of bearing hills and bigger bunches of bananas were harvested due to sufficient rainfall,” sabi pa ng PSA.
“Expansion of plantation areas was reported in SOCCSKSARGEN.”
“Increased demand from local consumers and Hotel and Restaurants Industries (HRIs) and higher buying price from traders pushed up the prices of banana during the first quarter,” nakasaad pa sa report ng PSA.
Ang average farm-gate price ng saging ay tumaas ng 7.47 percent sa P16.90 kada kilo, mula sa P15.73 kada kilo noong nakaraang taon. JASPER ARCALAS
