KINUMPIRMA ng mga opisyal ng Department of Health (DOH) na nakapagtala na sila sa Filipinas ng kauna-unahang local cases ng mas nakahahawang Delta variant ng COVID-19, na unang natukoy sa India.
Sa isang pulong balitaan, sinabi ni DOH Undersecretary at Spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire na batay sa isinagawa nilang pinakahuling genome sequencing run ay may natukoy pa silang 16 bagong Delta variant cases, sanhi upang umabot na ang kabuuang mga kaso nito sa 35, mula sa dating 19 lamang.
Ayon kay Vergeire, sa naturang bagong bilang ay 11 ang lokal na Delta variant cases at lima naman ang returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs).
Sa11 local cases aniya ay dalawa ang natukoy sa Metro Manila at isa sa mga ito ang namatay habang isinusugod sa pagamutan noong Hunyo 28 samantalang ang isa pa ay nakarekober na mula sa COVID-19 noong Hunyo 23.
May anim na Delta variant cases din na natukoy sa Region 10 at ang lahat ng mga ito ay nakarekober na.
Ang isang lokal na kaso ng sakit ay natukoy sa Metro Manila ngunit may address naman sa Region 3. Ang pasyente ay nakarekober na rin matapos na dapuan ng karamdaman noong Hunyo 27.
Sinabi ni Vergeire na ang lahat ng mga kasong ito ay walang batid na koneksiyon sa isa’t isa.
Samantala, ang dalawa pang lokal na kaso ay natukoy naman sa Region 6 at nakarekober na rin matapos na magkasakit noong Mayo 27.
Sa limang ROFs naman, isa ang dumating sa bansa mula sa United Kingdom noong Abril 26 at na-tagged na bilang recovered matapos ang 14-day quarantine.
Dalawa pa sa kanila ang dumating mula sa Qatar noong Hunyo 15 at gumaling na rin mula sa karamdaman.
Anang DOH official, biniberipika pa nila ang arrival date at quarantine status ng dalawa pang ROF cases.
Matatandaang ang Delta variant ng COVID-19, na unang na-detect sa India noong Disyembre 2020, ay mas nakahahawa kumpara sa orihinal na COVID-19 strain.
Ito’y dahil sa presensiya ng L452R mutation, na nagpapahintulot sa virus upang makadaan sa immune system ng isang tao at mas mabilis na kumalat sa mga cells.
Inatasan naman na ng DOH ang mga apektadong local government units (LGUs) na paghusayin pa ang kanilang contact tracing efforts at magsagawa ng ‘back tracing’ sa mga Delta variant carriers.
