PATULOY sa pagbaba ang output level ng manufacturing sector sa Pilipinas noong Agosto matapos na muling magpatupad ng pinakamahigpit na community quarantine dahil sa pagkalat ng Delta variant ng COVID-19, ayon sa monthly survey ng IHS Markit.
Base sa datos, bumaba sa 46.4 ang Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) noong nakaraang buwan mula sa 50.4 noong Hulyo, at sa 47.3 noong Agosto 2020.
Ang latest reading ang pinakamahina rin sa loob ng 15 buwan magmula noong Mayo 2020 na may 40.1.
“With the announcement of tightening ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) measures in early August, the latest contraction in operating conditions in the Philippines manufacturing sector came as no surprise,” wika ni Shreeya Patel, economist sa IHS Markit.
“Factories and their clients in the Metro Manila area once again paused their production lines in a bid to curb the spread of the new delta variant,” dagdag pa niya.
Ang Metro Manila ay isinailalim sa ECQ mula Agosto 6 hanggang 20 sa gitna ng paglobo ng mga kaso ng COVID-19 dahil sa Delta variant. Sinundan ito ng modified ECQ na tatagal hanggang Setyembre 7, 2021.
Lumitaw rin sa datos ng IHS Markit na ang lahat ng limang PMI components ay lumala, kung saan bumaba ang production volumes sa ika-5 sunod na buwan, gayundin ang customer demand sa isa sa pinakamabilis na rates sa series history.
Nahinto rin ang orders ng mga kompanya dahil sa pagsasara ng mga negosyo, habang bumagsak ang exports sa pinakamabilis na rate sa loob ng 13 buwan.
“On a brighter note, firms’ expectations towards the outlook remained optimistic owing to hopes that the latest downturn is only temporary,” ani Patel.
“Looking at price, easing input costs suggests that the sharp price pressures seen since the start of the year are starting to ease,” dagdag pa niya.
