OLYMPIC BOXING QUALIFIER KANSELADO

INANUNSIYO ng International Olympic Committee Boxing Task Force (BTF) via virtual meeting ang pagkansela sa isang Olympic Qualifier para sa Tokyo Games.

Ang torneo ay orihinal na nakatakda noong May 2020 sa Paris subalit ipinagpaliban ngayong taon dahil sa COVID-19.

Dahil sa pandemya ay iniurong ng Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (TOCOG) ang Games sa July ngayong taon.

Ayon kay Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) secretary-general Ed Picson, na dumalo sa meeting kasama ang mahigit sa  30 iba pang Asian countries, ang  forum ay pinamunuan nina Task Force Head Morinari Watanabe ng Japan at Lenny Abbey, isa pang IOC official at Task Force member.

Sinabi ni Picson na ipinaliwanag ng Task Force na dahil sa time constraints at safety concerns ay nagpasiya itong kanselahin ang World Qualifiers.

Ayon kay ABAP president Ricky Vargas,  “this might prove beneficial to our cause, since some of our boxers are ranked highly among those who have not yet qualified. I hope we get at least two more in Tokyo”.

Dalawang Filipino boxers ang nag-qualify na sa Olympics sa pamamagitan ng Asian/Oceanian Qualifying Tournament na ginanap sa Amman, Jordan noong January-February ng 2020. Sila ay sina men’s middleweight Eumir Felix Marcial at women’s Flyweight Irish Magno.

Nakatakdang ianunsiyo ng BTF ang mga qualified sa Olympics (dahil sa kanselasyon) sa Marso.
