NAGSUMITE ang Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) ng karagdagang budget request na P450 million sa General Appropriations Act (GAA) para sa pahahanda at paglahok ng Filipino athletes sa limang major international competitions sa 2022.
Isinumite ni POC President Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino ang letter of request kay Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III sa pamamagitan nina Senate Committee on Appropriations Chair Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco at Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez.
Nasa P5 million ang hinihinging budget para sa Winter Olympics (Beijing, February 4-20), P150 million para sa Sixth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games o AIMAG (Bangkok at Chonburi, Thailand, March 10-20), P10 million sa The World Games o TWG (Birmingham, Alabama, USA, July 7-22), P270 million sa 19th Asian Games (Hangzhou, China, September 10-25) at P15 million para sa Fifth Asian Youth Games o AYG (Shantou, China, December 20-28).
“Participation in these high level sports events is truly significant as these are held only every four years,” wika ni Tolentino sa letter of request.
“Not only will joining these sports events showcase the Filipino brand of athletic talent, but more so elevate the morale of our athletes and inspire other young Filipinos to engage in sports training and development.”
Ipinaliwanag ni Tolentino na ang budgetary requirements ay base sa kabuuang bilang ng mga lalahok na atleta at ng events na kanilang lalahukan, kabilang ang magagastos sa training.
Inaasahan ng POC na ang Asian Games ang magkakaroon ng pinakamaraming kalahok mula 250 hanggang 275 athletes, kasunod ang AIMAG na may 160 athletes, AYG na may 15-20 at ang Winter Olympics na may tatlo hanggang apat na atleta.
Ang TWG ay mula sa imbitasyon ng international federations na wala sa Summer o Winter Olympics programs ng International Olympic Committee.
Sinabi pa ni Tolentino na ang bilang ng isasabak sa Asian Games ay nakadepende sa performance ng mga atleta sa AIMAG.
“The final composition of the delegation to Hangzhou will be based on the AIMAG,” aniya. “If the athletes perform well, they’ll be going to the Asian Games. If not, they won’t be on the list.”
