SINIMULAN na ng San Miguel Corporation (SMC) ang paglilinis sa Ilog Pasig na popondohan nito ng P2 bilyon upang mabawasan ang pagbaha sa Metro Manila at iba pang lalawigan sa paligid ng Laguna de Bay.
Sa pakikipagtulungan ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), nakapagtanggal na ang San Miguel ng 54,000 metric tons ng basura at putik simula noong Hulyo mula sa mababaw na parte ng ilog sa Pandacan at Malacanang sa siyudad ng Maynila.
Sa kasalukuyan ay nililinis ang parte ng Ilog Pasig na malapit sa Pandacan at Malacanang. Lilinisin din ng SMC ang bahagi ng Pasig River na malapit sa C-5 sa Marikina river junction, sa Manila Bay, at sa Makati-Estrella area.
Ayon sa bathymetric studies ng SMC, may mga parte ang Pasig River at Marikina River na 1 ½ meters na lang ang lalim habang sa Pandacan naman ay dalawang metro ang lalim.
“Ang pangunahing suliranin na gusto naming solusyunan ay ang pagbaha na nararanasan ng milyon-milyong Pilipino sa loob at labas ng Metro Manila. Ito ay dala ng mga problemang matagal nang hindi nagagawan ng solusyon. Hindi pagpapaganda ang dapat maging prioridad kundi ang paglilinis nito na siyang daan para mapaganda ito,”wika ni SMC president Ramon Ang.
Makatutulong din, aniya, ang paglilinis ng Ilog Pasig para sa pagbabawas ng siltation sa Laguna de Bay. Ang target ay tatlong milyon metric tons ng basura at putik na maiaalis sa Ilog Pasig o buwanang target na 50,000 metric tons sa loob ng limang taon.
“Sa paglilinis at pagpapalalim ng Ilog Pasig ay magpapataas ng kapasidad nito bilang daanan ng tubig baha galing sa Marikina River na kadalasang napupunta sa Laguna Lake sa pamamagitan ng Manggahan Floodway. Sa pamamagitan ng paglilinis ay maaaring mabawasan ang pagbahang nararanasan ng Marikina at maging ng mga lungsod at bayan sa Laguna tulad ng Calamba, San Pedro, Biñan, Sta. Cruz at Pila, sa Laguna tulad nung naranasan yung Bagyong Ulysses,” wika ni Ang.
Bukod sa Pasig ay ginagawa na rin ng San Miguel ang paglilinis ng Tullahan River system na pinondohan ng kompanya ng P1 bilyon. Nakatulong ito upang mabawasan ang grabeng pagbaha sa Malabon, Navotas, at Valenzuela. May kabuuang 463,000 metric tons ng basura at putik ang natanggal mula sa ilog.
