PUMALO sa $98.5 billion ang outstanding foreign debt ng bansa noong 2020 sa pagnanais ng pamahalaan na madagdagan ang pondo laban sa COVID-19.

Ayon sa Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), ang external debt ng bansa ay lumobo ng $14.9 billion hanggang end-2020 mula sa $83.62 billion noong 2019, kung saan 7.1% o $6.5 billion ay nakuha sa fourth quarter.

Sa datos ng central bank, ang public sector external debt ay tumaas sa $58.1 billion sa huling quarter mula sa $54.4 billion noong Setyembre.

Karamihan o 89% ng numero ay hiniram ng national government na nagkakahalagang $51.9 billion, habang ang $6.3 billion ay inutang ng government-owned and -controlled corporations, government financial institutions, at ng BSP.

Ayon kay BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno, nakalikom ang pamahalaan ng $2.8 billion mula sa pag-iisyu ng global bonds at $733 million net availments mula sa official sources sa huling taong buwan sa layuning madagdagan ang COVID-19 funding nito at matustusan ang infrastructure projects.

Tumaas din ang borrowings ng pribadong sektor sa  $40.4 billion hanggang end-December laban sa $37.6 billion na naitala sa unang siyam na buwan ng 2020 dahil sa net availments ng private banks at private non-banks.

Ayon sa BSP, ang major  creditor countries ay ang Japan ($15.0 billion),  US ($3.4 billion), United Kingdom ($3.3 billion, at Netherlands ($3 billion).
