MANANATILI ang Pilipinas na kabilang sa ‘fastest growing country’ sa  East Asia and the Pacific Region ngayong taon hanggang sa 2020, ayon sa World Bank.

Sa  kanilang June Global Economics Prospect (GEP) report, itinaas ng World Bank ang economic growth forecast nito para sa Pilipinas sa 6.6 percent mula sa  6.5 percent sa 2020.

Ang bansa ay tinataya pa ring magpoposte ng 6.7 porsiyentong paglago ngayong taon at sa susunod na taon. Gayunman, ang naturang lebel ng paglago ay nananatiling mababa sa 7 hanggang 8 percent na target ng pamahalaan ngayong taon hanggang sa 2022.

“Growth in the Philippines and Vietnam remains robust, but capacity constraints (e.g., high capacity utilization rates) limit further acceleration, especially in the Philippines,” nakasaad sa report ng World Bank.

Ayon sa Washington-based lender, ang East Asia and the Pacific Region ay tinatayang unti-unting hihina mula sa 6.3 percent ngayong 2018 sa 6.1 sa 2019 at  6 percent sa 2020.

Ang fastest growing country sa rehiyon ay ang  Cambodia sa 6.9 percent sa 2018; Myanmar at Lao PDR  na may 6.9 percent sa 2019; at Myanmar sa 7.1 percent sa 2020.

Ang iba pang top growing countries sa 2018 ay ang Vietnam na may 6.8 percent at Pilipinas at Myanmar na may 6.7 percent.

Sa 2019, ang talaan ay kinabibilangan ng  Cambodia at Pilipinas na may paglago na  6.7 percent at Vietnam na may 6.6 percent.

Sa 2020, ang  Lao PDR ay may 6.9 percent growth habang ang Pilipinas at Cambodia ay may 6.6 percent.

“If it can be sustained, the robust economic growth that we have seen this year could help lift millions out of poverty, particularly in the fast-growing economies of South Asia,” wika ni World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim.

“But growth alone won’t be enough to address pockets of extreme poverty in other parts of the world. Policymakers need to focus on ways to support growth over the longer run—by boosting productivity and labor force participation—in order to accelerate progress toward ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity,” dagdag pa niya.
