DAAN-DAANG katao, babae, lalaki, bata, at matanda na taga-Nasugbu ang pinas­lang ng mga Kastila sa loob mismo ng Lumang Simbahan sa Nasugbu, Batangas matapos nilang sunugin ito noong 1896.  Sa sinulat ni Manuel Sa­t­ron, isang Spanish Historian, sa artikulong Bata­ngas y Su Probincia, inilarawan niya ang simbahan noong 1895 na hindi pa ito sinusunog.

Ayon kay Satron, 45 years old na noon ang lumang simbahan, sinusuportahan ng mga mamamayan at pinamamahalaan ng cura paroco na si Don Leocadio Dimanlig, na mas kilala sa katawagang Padre Kadio. Siya ang cura paroco sa Nasugbu mula 1895 hanggang 1900, at nakatakdang makasaksi sa pagkawasak ng nasabing simbahan sa panimula ng Philippine Revolutionn.

Nakagawian na ng lahat ng mananampa­lataya sa Nasugbu at ng nga kalapit bayan, na magsimba tuwing Biyernes o mag-visita iglesia man lamang, bilang pagkilala sa ikalawang patron na Nuestra Senora de Escalera. Nang masunog ang simbahan, nagpatuloy pa rin sa pagsisimba ang mga mananampa­lataya, kahit pa sa kasalukuyang panahon.

Mula pa noong 1896 ay hindi na pinagmimisahan ang nasabing simbahan ngunit patuloy pa rin ang mga debotong tag-Nasugbu sa pagdalaw sa simbahan tuwing Biyernes upang humingi ng awa kapag nawawalan na sila ng pag-asa. LEANNE SPHERE
