SUICIDE MULA DEPRESYON

(Part 1)

PAALAM Ms. Kate Spade. Paalam Mr. Anthony Bourdain. Pareho nating iniidolo. She was only 55 y/o. He was 61 y/o. She was worth U$D 200-M mula sa isang empire built on bags and shoes. He was worth £11.95-M pero tataas pa ito dahil sa kanyang na-pipintong TV shows on travel and food sa buong mundo.

Pumanaw si Kate around 10 am ng June 5th. Pumanaw si Anthony around 8am ng June 8th. They both died from suicide sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigti. Despite the fact that they were both very successful at naging household name, pareho silang dumaranas ng severe depression.

Sa isang interview para sa programang “How I Built This”, tinanong si Kate about how they developed the company into a major lifestyle brand. “So, my husband and I were out, at a Mexican restaurant,” Kate Spade said, “and he just said, what about handbags? And I said, honey, you just don’t start a handbag company. And he said, why not? How hard can it be?” Doon nagsimula ang isang pangarap. Starting with just 6 designs, she combined sleek shapes and colorful palettes in a new way. Kate created an iconic, acces-sible handbag line that bridged young generation and high-end fashion. In 1999, she sold 56% of the brand to Neiman Marcus for U$D 33-M. Liz Claiborne later acquired the company in 2007. The Coach luxury company announced in May 2017 to buy Kate Spade brand for U$D 2.4-B.

Nagtapos siya noong 1978 sa The Culinary Institute of America. In 2005 he started hosting Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on Travel Channel at naglibot sa buong mundo. In 2010 he was presented an Honorary CLIO Award, given to individuals who are changing the world by encouraging people to think differently. He was said to be in a ‘dark mood’ in the days before his birthday on June 25.

DEPRESYON

ANO ANG DEPRESYON?

Ayon sa mga psychiatrists, “depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.” Depression causes feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. 1 in 6 people will experience depression at some time in their life. Depression can strike at any time, but on average, it 1st appears during the teen-age to mid-20s. Women are more likely than men to experience depression. Being sad is not the same as having depression. In grief, self-esteem is usually maintained. In major depression, feelings of worthlessness are common. Symptoms must last at least 2 weeks for a true diagnosis of depression. Depression can affect anyone – even to a person who appears to live in relatively ideal or com-fortable lifestyle. Maging sino ka man.

Depressed mood for more than 2 weeks.
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed.
Changes in appetite, marked weight loss or weight gain.
Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much.
Loss of energy or increased fatigue.
Senseless activities or slowed movement and speech.
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
Feeling worthless or guilty with thoughts of death or suicide.

NEVER SAY THESE

Grow up! – This comment expresses a true lack of compassion.
Maybe you should learn from your mistakes! – This gives them more insecurity and reasons to be upset.
No one said life is fair! – This is equivalent to kicking them when they’re down.
Life is hard for everyone! – This adds to the sense of hopelessness and failure.
It’s all in your head! – Do you think they’re making the whole thing up?
Snap out of it! – This can end up making them withdraw from you.
I thought you were stronger than this! – This is to make yourself feel better, not them.
In the meantime, kailangan natin maging mas sensitive sa mga taong nalulungkot.
