As the country celebrated the annual World Teachers’ Day, it reminds us of the very important role that teachers play in society.
Teachers contribute greatly to shaping the lives of people and in charting the destiny of nations. Considering the value and dignity of teaching, the age-old saying “teaching in the noblest of all professions” rings true up to the present. Teachers are therefore the noblest of all professionals.Teaching as a profession in the Philippines used to be very dignified and respectable. Among other professionals, Filipino teachers used to enjoy the highest regard from people in the community.
Three important things define us: the teachers’ character, their present socio-economic condition, and the present status of Philippine education. Filipino teachers are known to be patient, hardworking, and dedicated. One thing that can attest to this is the unwavering commitment of teachers assigned in far-flung places in the country, particularly in the rural areas.
Teachers’ commitment to work and to the country is also evident in their active participation during elections where they are deputized by the commissions on elections to help ensure an honest, clean, and orderly election in the country even to the point of risking their own lives.
While teaching is a very lucrative job overseas and many Filipino mentors grab the opportunity to make good fortune abroad, others preferred to stay to practice their profession serving the country with utmost dedication. These Filipinos put the service of the country above personal benefits.
Indeed, Filipino teachers today are understood by looking at the context in which they live and function. Despite the seemingly immense challenges and problems that beset our teachers, they have remained loyal to their profession.
True, the teachers are the unsung heroes of our country.
