THE EFFECT OF THE LEARNING RESOURCE NOOK TO THE LEARNERS

Professional teachers have their noble and ultimate goal for their pupils. They want them not only to succeed but also to excel in all areas of life. One of the ways that can facilitate this goal is to give the gift of literacy. And in order to become literate, learners must be able to read and comprehend.

Reading with comprehension is the road in achieving the different learning competencies. It is also a great help for teachers to identify and use strategies that will ignite the interest of the learners that will lead to successful facilitation in the classroom. If pupils can comprehend, quality education can be attained which will also lead to a more efficient services for teachers.

However, many pupils have difficulties in reading and comprehension the Sta. Victoria Elementary School so the teaching staff made a way of motivating the learners by way of purchasing two nipa huts or kubos, where every pupil can stay and read their lesson comfortably every one o’clock with the teachers to assist and with the supervision of the Principal Mrs. Remedies Carlos.

Reading comprehension is the bottleneck of teaching-learning process. It is the key factor in achieving the different learning competencies. It also a great help for teachers to identify and prepare strategies that will ignite the interest of the learners that will lead to successful facilitation in the classroom. If most of the pupils can comprehend, quality education can be attained which will also lead to a more efficient, convenient and reliable service to clienteles.

However, many pupils have difficulty comprehending what they are reading. Poor comprehension of what they read then they cannot answer questions. As a result, teacher’s expectations will not be attained as the reading comprehension of pupils affects their school performance. Therefore, schools need to have some sort of remedial reading program to help those identified struggling learners. Pupils with low reading skills need interventions and the greater the interventions will have impact on the pupils’ reading skills.

To identify those pupils with low reading comprehension, the school has conducted an individual reading in Grade III using PHIL-IRI English materials and we observed that most of the learners cannot answer the questions.

The goals were to reduce the number of learners identified with low comprehension and lessen the number of absenteeism, cutting classes and playful learners. As an instructional leader, I will initiate the implementation of the program. As resource developer, I must know the current needs, trends and issues in relation to the curriculum. I need to have a good communication skill that I should be able to make my co-teachers, parents and pupils learn and comprehend. Strict supervision to teachers teaching English is needed to improve their teaching pedagogy Reading Comprehension in English III pupils.

In six months, we attained the expected output of increase number of Grade III pupils that can comprehend what they are reading, identified success indicator of achieved 58-percent result of PHIL-IRI in post-test and minimized absenteeism, cutting classes and playfulness of some learners.
