The Working Animals art collective opens their latest group exhibition, Working Animals Northbound, at BenCab Museum in Baguio.
Composed of acclaimed and emergent voices among today’s young artists in the Philippines: Ronson Culibrina, Yeo Kaa, Keb Cerda, Dale Erispe, John Marin, Pow Marin, Lawrence Canto, Aiya Balingit, Johanna Helmuth, Jayvee David, Yani Unsana, and Jett Osian, the group once again showcases the diverse styles and processes they have charted in their artistic exploration, and hint at possible trajectories to track in the years to come.
The exhibition highlights the timeless appeal of traditional art forms such as painting and sculpture but at the same time declares a contemporary presence among the works through references to current events and popular culture, and intervention of digital technology and social media.
The imagery, color, figuration, compositional techniques, and personal styles of the artists evoke a range of mood and character, from the narrative, symbolic and literary, to the humorous and satirical. Bringing in a gathering of this diversity to a key locus of creativity in the northern Philippine highlands intensifies the vibrant artistic conversation the collective intends to spark.
Working Animals Northbound is curated by Ruel Caasi and is presented in cooperation with Secret Fresh Gallery.
In celebration of the 121st anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence, museum visitors can also view Philippine Revolutionary Army and World War II Soldiers in the Philippines by Dan H. Dizon, at the Sepia Gallery.
Both exhibitions will be on view until 4 August 2019.
