MILAN – Mula sa pagiging isang temporary league caretaker, isa na siyang full-time top honcho na tinatawag na ‘The Healing Commissioner’.
At ngayon, si Willie Marcial ay nakatakdang maging isa sa ‘longest serving commissioners’ ng Philippine Basketball Association.
Sa isa sa key resolutions na inaprubahan ng PBA board sa planning session nito sa Rosa Grand Milan, si Marcial ay binigyan ng panibagong three-year term bago ang ikatlo at huling taon ng kanyang initial three-year tenure sa pamumuno sa premier cage league ng bansa.
“We reappointed the commissioner for another three-year term. We were open and transparent to his performance. We talked to him. That’s the good about the board. The board decided to reappoint him for another three-year term,” pahayag ni PBA board chairman Ricky Vargas.
Malaki ang naitulong ni Marcial upang mapag-isa at mapagkasundo ang mga governor, at maibalik ang liga sa magandang kalagayan.
Sa panibagong three-year term, si Marcial ay magiging ikatlong may pinakamahabang termino bilang PBA commissioner, sumusunod kina Leo Prieto at Jun Bernardino na may tig-8 taon.
Mahihigitan niya ang tenures nina Mariano Yenko (1984-87), Rudy Salud (1988-92), Rey Marquez (1992-93), Noli Eala (2003-2007), Sonny Barrios (2008-2010), Chito Salud (2010-2015) at Chito Narvasa (2015-17).
Para sa kanyang ikatlong taon bilang PBA commissioner, si Marcial ay magpapatupad ng ‘marquee programs’ sa ilalim ng headings ng Hustle, Heart and Hype.
“The PBA will continue to reach out to the less fortunate and perform CSR activities, including Home Court where players and officials visit barangay street courts to interact with fans in surprise visits, Open Practice where teams hold workouts in college gyms, Blood Donation Drive, Kids Day Out, Make A Wish Foundation, World Vision, PBA Heroes and Veterans and PBA Run For A Cause,” wika ni Marcial.
