Ito ang inihayag ni BMX racer Patrick Coo, 19, na sisikaping makakuha ng Olympic ticket sa kanyang pagsabak sa UCI BMX World Cup 2021 – isang Tokyo Olympic Qualification tournament ns gaganapin sa Bogota, Colombia sa May 29-30.
Ang teenage cyclist ay isinilang at lumaki sa Bellflower, California. Nagsimula siyang kumarera sa edad na 6 at sisikaping magkuwalipika sa Olympiad kasunod ni London Olympian Daniel Caluag na kinatawan ang bansa noong 2012.
“Danny has always been a great man and inspiration to me. He is my biggest motivation. After watching him in the 2012 Olympics, it something that I also want to do. Put our country on the map,” pagbabahagi ni Coo.
“He always told me to ride for fun and raise my heart out and that’s all that matters,” dagdag pa niya.
Noong 2019 ay nakopo ni Coo ang titulo sa Asian Juniors BMX Championship sa Malaysia at naging bahagi ng Philippine Cycling team noong nakaraang taon.
“We have a lot of talented Filipino cyclists and one of them is our teenage BMX cyclist Patrick Coo. We are counting on him,” sabi ni PSC Chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez. Ang PSC ay nagbigay ng halos P1.2 million na financial assistance para sa kampanya ni Coo sa Colombia.
Inaprubahan din ng sports governing body ang P321,298 dagdag na pondo para sa airfare, accommodation, allowance, visa fee, insurance, COVID swab test, at entry fee ng entourage ni Coo, kasama sina national coaches Ednalyn Hualda at Frederick Farr.
“Patrick has a lot of potential, not only for this year but in the next Olympic cycle in Paris, France,” dagdag ni Ramirez.
Maaaring si Coo ang pinakabata sa Philippine team na naghahangad na maging isang Olympian, ngunit batid niya kung ano talaga ang kanyang nais buhat nang magsimula sa sport — ang itayo ang bandila at bigyan ng karangalan ang bansa.
“Dreams don’t work unless you work for it. We’re chasing the dream right now and the dream is the goal. I’ll do my best and hopefully, I’ll make it to qualify in Tokyo Olympics,” ani Coo. CLYDE MARIANO
