BINURA ni Filipino-American pole vaulter Natalie Uy ang Philippine record, na kanya ring naitala sa 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), makaraang magrehistro ng 4.30 meters sa Acadia Invitational sa Greenville, North Carolina.
Ang dating record ay 4.25 meters, na nagbigay kay Uy ng gold medal sa SEA Games.
Sa isang panayam sa Tiebreaker Times na iniere noong Linggo, sinabi ni Uy na nilimatahan ng coronavirus pandemic ang kanyang abilidad na palakasin ang kanyang kasanayan, kabilang ang pagbabawas ng trainings sa kanyang coach sa virtual sessions.
“It definitely took a toll on me. When you’re used to competing, there’s an element of competition that you don’t get obviously when you’re alone and you’re not seeing other people,” ani Uy.
Ayon sa Ohio-based athlete, si American pole vault athlete at 2016 Summer Olympics silver medalist Sandi Morris ang nag-organisa sa Acadia Invitational sa sarili nitong likod-bahay.
“During quarantine, her family built a pole vault runway in her backyard because she didn’t have a place to train as well,” aniya. “So she and her dad actually built one and now they have this awesome facility, so they wanted to hold a meet.”
Sinabi ni Uy na kinatawan niya ang Filipinas sa mga inimbitahang top vaulter sa United States.
“It was fun because everyone’s been in the same boat. We’ve all just been thrown off our horses, just trying to shake off the rust and get back into competition mode,” dagdag pa niya.
Target ni Uy na maging bahagi ng Philippine team sa 2021 Tokyo Olympics, na iniurong sa July 2021 dahil sa global health crisis.
