TINAPOS ng Team Philippines ang impresibong performance nito sa Asian Youth and Junior Championships noong Miyerkoles na may 19 gold medals, kabilang ang tatlo mula kay weightlifter Vanessa Sarno, sa Gautam Buddha University sa New Delhi, India.

Nagtala ang 19-anyos na si Sarno ng total lift na 216kgs (95kgs sa snatch at 121kgs sa clean and jerk) upang mapanatili ang Junior women’s 71kg title.

Pumangalawa si Phattharathida Wongsing ng Thailand na may 212kgs (92kgs at 120kgs) kasunod si Sevinchoy Komilova ng Uzbekistan na may 198kgs (88kgs at 110kgs).

Ayon kay Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas (SWP) President Monico Puentevella, ang two-time SEA Games champion na si Sarno ay isinugod sa Sharda Hospital noong July 27 at inilagay sa intensive care unit makaraang makaranas ng mataas na Q.

“Thank goodness, she recovered. I pulled her out of the hospital and let her rest in the hotel. She’ll go back to the hospital upon arrival in Manila,” pahayag ni Puentevella sa Philippine News Agency.

Si Sarno ay nagsasanay sa ilalim nina national lifters Nicolas Jaluag at Liza Danao sa nakalipas na 11 taon.

Ang Zamboanga lifters ang nagbigay ng pinakamaraming medalya mula kina Jhodie Peralta (3 golds, Youth women’s 49kg); Angeline Colonia (3 golds, 1 silver at 1 bronze, Youth/Junior women’s 45kg); magkapatid na Rosegie Ramos (3 golds, Junior women’s 49kg) at Rose Jean Ramos (1 gold and 2 silvers, Junior women’s 45kg); Albert Ian delos Santos (2 golds at 2 silvers, Youth/Junior men’s 61kg); Alexsandra Ann Diaz (1 gold, 1 silver at 1 bronze, Youth women’s 40kg) at Rosalinda Faustino (2 silvers at 1 bronze, Youth women’s 55kg).

Ang iba pang medalists ay sina Prince Keil delos Santos ng Angono, Rizal na may 2 golds at 1 silver) at Eron Borres ng Cebu City na may 1 gold, 1 silver at 1 bronze sa Youth men’s 49kg category.

Ang limang coach na sumama sa India trip ay sina Robert Colonia, Allen Jayfrus Diaz, Joe Patrick Diaz, Patrick Cielo Lee at Kelly Kay Rojas, na nag-alaga kay Sarno sa ospital.

Ang Youth division ay para sa mga atletang may edad 13-17 habang ang Junior division ay para sa 15 to 20 years old.

Ang Pilipinas ay nagwagi ng 15 medalya noong nakaraang taon sa Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Ang mga medalist ay sina Rose Jean Ramos (4 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Sarno (3 golds), Faustino (3 golds), Rosegie Ramos (3 golds), Colonia (2 golds, 1 silver), at Prince Keil Delos Santos (2 bronzes).

Nanalo rin ng gold sina Prince Keil Delos Santos, Borres, Colonia, Faustino at Albert Ian Delos Santos sa 2023 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships sa Durres, Albania.
