TULOY sa pagbagsak ang ekonomiya ng Filipinas sa first quarter ng 2021 dahil sa nararanasang pandemya dulot ng COVID-19, ayon sa Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Ito na ang ika-5 sunod na quarter na sumadsad ang ekonomiya ng bansa.

Sa isang virtual briefing, sinabi ni National Statistician Dennis Mapa na naitala ang first-quarter GDP growth sa -4.2%, kumpara sa  -0.7% na nairehistro sa kaparehong quarter noong nakaraang taon at sa  -8.3% sa fourth quarter.

Ang lahat ng tatlong major industries ay lumagapak sa unang tatlong buwan ng taon —agriculture sa -0.3%, industry sa -2.5%, at services sa -0.1%.

Ayon pa kay Mapa, pangunahing contributor sa pagbagsak ng ekonomiya ang construction (-24.2%), other services (-38.0%), at real estate and ownership of dwellings (-13.2%).

“Our aversion to risk for most of 2020 has placed the country in a long period of quarantine. This came at a huge cost to the economy and the people,” sabi ni Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua sa parehong briefing.

“However, we can see improvements as the rate of contraction has slowed,” dagdag pa niya, binanggit ang 0.3% quarter-on-quarter growth mula sa fourth quarter ng 2020.

Magugunitang isinailalim ang Metro Manila at iba pang “high-risk areas” sa general community quarantine (GCQ) sa malaking bahagi ng first quarter, bago ibinalik sa pinakamahigpit na enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) simula noong Marso 29 dahil sa biglang pagtaas ng kaso ng COVID-19.
