HANDA at determinado ang Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) na mapagtagumpayan ni Hidilyn Diaz ang pangarap na gintong medalya sa Olympics.
Isiniwalat ni PSC Chairman William ‘Butch’ Ramirez na isang sistema ang binuo ng ahensiya, batay na rin sa kahilingan ni Diaz, ang Team HD na naging daan para tuluyang tapusin ng weightlifting star ang 97 taong pagdarahop ng Pinoy sa gintong medalya sa Olympics.
Matapos ang matagumpay na silver medal performance ni Diaz sa 2016 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, kaagad na inaprubahan ng PSC Board ang kahilingan ng Samahang Weightlifiting ng Pilipinas para suportahan ang paghahanda nito sa 2020 Olympic edition.
“We have limited resources but we saw her potential so we took the chance,” pagbabalik-tanaw ni Ramirez.
Ibinigay ng PSC ang karampatang budget para mabuo ang Team HD – na kinabibilangan ng foreign coach, strength and conditioning coach, masseuse, sports psychologist at sports nutritionist.
“Nakatutok kami sa pagsasanay ni Diaz sa Malaysia,” sambit ni Ramirez.
Iginiit ni Ramirez na ibinigay rin ng PSC ang parehong sistema batay sa kahilingan ng mga asosasyon para kina gymnast Caloy Yulo, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, at judoka Kiyomi Watanabe, maging sa grupo ng mga boxer.
“I have always said, experience is an advantage. Hidilyn took 4 Olympic cycles to finally attain her golden dream,” pahayag ni Ramirez, tanging PSC chairman na gumabay sa Team Philippines sa dalawang SEA Games overall championship (2005 at 2019), at para sa kauna-unahang gintong medalya ng bansa.
Kabuuang P2.7 bilyon ang nailaan ng PSC para tustusan ang paghahanda ng mga atleta sa Olympics, kabilang ang kanilang pagsasanay, kompetisyon sa abroad, kagamitan at allowances.
“I think it gives everyone more impetus to plan and start their preparations,” pahayag ni Ramirez. “Pero dito muna tayo, savor the moment and keep praying for more moments of victories for our athletes and the Filipino people.” EDWIN ROLLON
