Jose Tayawa opened Tayawa Tolentino CPAs & Company in 1993 in Marikina City to offer bookkeeping, auditing, and taxation, business licensing and management services.

“Before the pandemic we were servicing 90 corporate and individual clients and I employ 17 professionals in the firm. We were doing really well,” Jose shared.

When NCR went under community quarantine, the accounting firm has to cease office operations. Being a non-essential industry and considering the restrictions on transportations Jose implemented a work from home arrangement for his staff.

“Income was scarce and I have to reduce the employees’ salaries so that everyone gets paid. I am thankful that most of them agreed to the reduce salaries. Those who did not, decided to resign. I was sad but I understood them.  It was hard to have to let go of people this way. But there was no other way at that time,” he explained.

Come December, understandably, the firm had to provide for the employees’ 13th month pay. This is a struggle on the part of the firm as the past months’ salaries already came from Jose’s personal savings.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce, Inc., where Tayawa Tolentino CPAs & Company is a member, introduced Bayanihan CARES to Jose.

“The loan I got was used to pay the 13th month pay of my employees. The firm owe them that for staying and sacrificing during the past year,” Jose said.

Regardless of the challenges, Jose remain optimistic of the future.

“We will recover and work even harder to gain more clients. What I learned from this experience is that there is nothing sure in this world. We have to learn our lesson from this experience. Save as much as we can for the future.” Jose concluded.
