UMAASA si Carlos Yulo na makababawi sa pagsabak sa men’s vault finals ng artistic gymnastics ngayong Lunes matapos ang nakadidismayang performance sa floor, mahigit isang linggo na ang nakalilipas.
Umiskor si Yulo ng 14.733 points upang tumapos sa sixth place sa vault at makabilang sa top eight participants na aabante sa finals. Subalit sa kanyang paboritong floor exercise ay tumapos lamang siya sa 44th place mula sa 64 kalahok.
Hindi rin naging maganda ang performance ng 2019 floor exercise world champion sa rings (24th), parallel bars (55th), horizontal bar (63rd), at pommel horse (69th).
“Hopefully he is more relaxed this time,” wika ni Gymnastics Association of the Philippines President Cynthia Carrion-Norton sa bisperas ng laban ni Yulo. “But watching all the great gymnasts from all over the world could be intimidating.”
Sasabak din si South Korea’s Shin Jeahwan sa finals na nakatakda sa alas-7 ng gabi (Tokyo time)bilang top qualifier na may 14.866 points, kasunod sina Armenia’s Artur Davytan na may 14.866 at Russian Olympic Committee top bet Nikita Nagorny na may 14.783.
Ang iba pa sa walong qualifiers ay sina Brazil’s Caiou Sauza (14.700), Turkey’s Ahmet Onder (14.466), Hongkong’s Shek Wai Hung (14.274), at Spain’s Nicolau Mir (14.133).
Ayon kay Carrion-Norton, para sa coach ni Yulo na si Munehiro Kugimiya, sina Shin at Onder ang liyamado sa event subalit ipinahiwatig na may laban si Yulo sa medalya.
“According to Coach Mune [Kugimiya ], the two top vault athletes are Korea and Turkey with the difficulty of 6.02,” ani Carrion-Nortonz “Caloy’s difficulty is 5.60. If Shin and Onder earn deductions and Caloy makes a perfect score, we have a good chance.”
