POSIBLENG makaranas ng brownouts ang Luzon dahil sa hindi planadong maintenance shutdown ng 647-megawatt(MW) Sual coal-fired Power Plant Unit 1, ayon sa Department of Energy (DOE)
Sa isang statement, sinabi ng DOE na ang 647-MW Sual Unit 1 ay sasailalim sa hindi planadong maintenance mula April 29, 2023 hanggang May 1, 2023, “to resolve the buildup of a leak from the plant’s boiler tube and cleaning of the generator stator lot bar to rectify the increase in temperature.”
Dahil papatak ito sa mahabang weekend, tiwala ang DOE na magkakaroon ng minimal o walang power interruptions dahil mababa ang demand sa naturang panahon.
Gayunman, nagbabala ang ahensiya na kapag ang maintenance shutdown ay may mas mahabang seven-day duration sa May 5–11, magreresulta ito sa posibleng yellow alert, o mas malala, red alert, sa Weeks 18 (May 1–May 7, 2023) at Week 19 (May 8–May 14, 2023).
Sa kabila nito, sinabi ng DOE na mahigpit itong nakikipag-ugnayan sa Manila Electric Company, ibang distribution utilities, at retail electricity suppliers para i-activate at i-expand ang Interruptible Load Program (ILP) upang mapagaan ang epekto kapag may kakulangan sa suplay at napipinto ang power interruptions sa grid.
“The DOE also requests public cooperation by rationalizing the use of power during the peak demand hours of 11:00 a.m.–12:00 noon, 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.,” sabi pa ng ahensiya.
“During these times, all offices and residences using air conditioners are also encouraged to set their thermostats at 25 degrees Celsius,” dagdag pa ng DOE.
