HINDI umano sapat ang isang araw na selebrasyon at pagkilala sa malaking sakripisyo at papel na ginagampanan ng mga manggagawa, partikular mula sa hanay ng private at public essential/ frontline workers na silang dahilan kung bakit hanggang sa ngayon ay nagagawang harapin at tugunan ng bansa ang mabigat na epektong dala ng pandemya.

Ayon kay Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit katangi-tangi ang Filipinas kumpara sa ibang bansa ay ang pagkakaroon nito ng mga manggagawang hindi napapagod at sumusuko, may dedikasyon at tunay na maaasahan sa kanilang pagtatrabaho.

“They are the backbone of our economy. These important traits of Filipino workers remain evident even in the midst of COVID-19 that has brought the country to a staggering halt,” sabi pa ng lider ng Kamara bilang kanyang mensahe sa pagdiriwang ng Araw ng mg Manggagawa kahapon.

“This Labor Day, it’s not only fitting but absolutely important to recognize and celebrate the amazing efforts of all essential and frontline workers and thank them for risking their lives to fight the pandemic — caring for the sick, feeding our families and keeping communities running. In essence, we continue to survive and thrive through this public health crisis mainly because of them,” sabi pa niya.

Subalit ayon kay Velasco, ang mas akmang pagbibigay-pugay sa binansagan din niyang ‘pandemic frontliners’ ay ang paglalatag ng kongkretong aksiyon ng pamahalaan na magbibigay proteksiyon at pangangalaga sa mga ito.

Kabilang sa iminungkahi ng House Speaker ang pagkakaroon ng frontline workers ng komprehensibong health and life insurance, kaukulang protective equipment, access sa life-saving COVID-19 vaccine; at kasiguruhang matatanggap nila ang kanilang allowances, sick leave at hazard pay.

“These should serve as a token of our appreciation and gratitude for them for keeping the economy in motion and the rest of us healthy and safe,” pagbibigay-diin ni Velasco. ROMER R. BUTUYAN
