SI boxer Eumir Felix Marcial ang magiging kapalit ni Ernest John ‘EJ’ Obiena bilang flagbearer ng Filipinas, kasama si judoka Kiyomi Watanabe sa opening ceremony ng Tokyo Olympics sa July 23 sa National Stadium.
Sinabi ni Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Rep. Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino na mas magiging kumbinyente kung si Marcial ang magdadala ng bandila ng bansa dahil darating siya sa Tokyo ngayong weekend.
“He [Marcial] has the most flexible schedule before and after the opening ceremony,” ani Tolentino. “We have already informed Eumir about his task and we are very thankful to EJ for under-standing. He cannot rebook his flight anymore.”
Si Marcial ay kumuha ng multiple flights mula sa kanyang training camp sa Colorado Springs sa US noong Huwebes at inaasahang darating sa Tokyo sa Sabado, anim na araw bago ang opening ceremony.
Si Obiena ay manggagaling naman sa Italy at darating sa Japan, ilang oras lamang bago ang opening ceremony.
“Because of protocols, EJ should be expecting delays at the airport and that would make it impossible for him to catch the opening ceremony,” ani Tolentino.
Si Marcial ay sasalang sa kanyang Olympic debut sa July 25 sa men’s middleweight round-of-32, habang si Watanabe ay sasabak sa women’s -63 kgs ng judo sa July 27.
