RIO PARALYMPICS MEDALIST MEDINA BINIGYANG-PUGAY

NAGBIGAY-PUGAY si Philippine Paralympic Committee (PCC) president Mike Barredo kay table tennis player at Rio Paralympics bronze medalist Josephine Medina, na pumanaw na noong Huwebes sa edad na 51.

“Ate Jo, as Medina was called, exemplified hard work and dedication to her sport that our national para-athletes can follow and look up to as an inspiration,” wika ni Barredo.

“This is what made her an exceptional athlete and champion and enabled her to win a bronze medal for the country in Rio.”

Pinutol ni Medina ang 16-year-old drought ng Pilipinas sa quadrennial global sports festival na tinampukan ng world’s best para-athletes magmula nang makopo ni Adeline Dumapong Ancheta ang unang  bronze sa Games sa women’s powerlifting sa 2000 edition na idinaos sa Sydney, Australia.

“Talagang hard worker ‘yang si Josephine and addicted to training, which is why she excelled in her sport,” wika ni para-athletics coach Joel Deriada, na nasaksihan ang pagwawagi ni Medina ng bronze medal sa Riocentro Pavilion 3 sa Brazilian carnival capital.

“Masipag talaga sa training si Ate Jo. Nagtatagal talaga kami sa pagpalo lampas nang isa o dalawang oras sa four hours namin na regular practice,” sabi naman ni coach Michael Dalumpines, na pinasalamatan ang Philippines Sports Commission (PSC) sa mabilis na pagtulong sa pamilya nito.

Sa kabila ng kanyang disability, si Medina ay naging miyembro ng national women’s team noong 1989, ayon kay Dalumpines, isa ring dating national standout.

Nagtapos sa Polytechnic University of the Philippines, si Medina ay naging dominante sa Southeast Asian level, kung saan nagwagi siya ng apat na gold medals sa 2008 ASEAN Para Games na ginanap sa Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Nanalo rin siya ng gold sa 2014, 2015, at 2017 editions ng meet na idinaos sa Naypyidaw, Myanmar, Singapore, at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, ayon sa pagkakasunod-sunod.

Nag-uwi naman si Medina ng silvers sa 2010 Guangzhou at 2018 Jakarta Asian Para Games at bronze medal sa 2014 Incheon edition.
