(Sa Pacquiao fight) SPENCE ‘OUT’, UGAS ‘IN’

HINDI na matutuloy ang inaabangang laban ni Manny Pacquiao kay Errol Spence makaraang magtamo ang unbeaten American ng torn retina sa kanyang kaliwang mata.

Papalitan ni World Boxing Association welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas si Spence at idedepensa ang kanyang titulo kontra 42-year-old Filipino southpaw sa August 21 sa Las Vegas.

Nakatakda sanang idepensa ni Ugas ang kanyang titulo sa undercard.

“I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to fight Manny Pacquiao on August 21,” wika ni Spence, ang International Boxing Federation at World Boxing Council champion.

“I was excited about the fight and the event. Unfortunately, the doctors found a tear in my left eye and said I needed to get surgery on it ASAP and that there was no way I could fight with my eye in that condition.”

Ayon sa mga organizer, natuklasan ni Spence na mayroon siyang torn retina sa pre-fight medical examination ng Nevada State Athletic Commission sa Las Vegas noong Lunes. Umuwi na siya sa Texas para magpagamot.

Tiniyak naman ni Pacquiao na hindi niya minamaliit ang kanyang bagong makakalaban.

“We’re not underestimating Ugas,” pahayag ng eight-division world champion sa Wild Card Gym, ilang oras makaraang ianunsiyo ang pagbabago.

“We should make sure na naka-focus pa rin tayo and then manalo tayo kasi championship din ito.”

“WBA world championship, so malaki pa rin itong laban na ‘to. Malaking karangalan para sa atin,” dagdag pa fighting senator.

Gigil din si Pacquiao na talunin si Ugas dahil nakataya sa laban ang WBA (super) welterweight belt — ang titulo na hindi naisuko ng boxing icon.

Nakopo ni Pacquiao ang WBA belt makaraang gapiin si Keith Thurman noong July 2019, ngunit idineklarang ‘champion in recess’ noong nakaraang taon dahil sa kanyang ‘inactivity’. Sa halip ay itinaas si Ugas, tangan ang ‘regular’ version ng WBA title, sa ‘super’ champion.

“Itong si Ugas, ito ‘yung nagkuha ng belt ko na ibinigay ng WBA, na hindi naman kami naglaban,” ani Pacquiao. “So this is a good thing, kung sinong … saan dapat nararapat ang belt na WBA.”
